Kapil Dev, the 1983 World Cup winning captain, grabbed the internet by storm on Friday. In a commercial for CRED, a credit card management tool, the former India captain may be seen. The commercial, which featured the legend, depicted him in a variety of roles as he imitated Bollywood megastar Ranveer Singh and his ‘unique’ fashion style. The 62-year-old legend can also be seen playing cricket in the ‘Ranveer Singh method’ in the humorous viral ad.
It is not the first time that the new tech startup has launched sports personalities in their ads. Earlier, stars like Neeraj Chopra, Rahul Dravid, Venkatesh Prasad, jagval Srinath, Maninder Singh and Saba Karim have featured in some viral CRED ads which garnered immense limelight.
Until recently, only movie stars and elite cricketers were used for commercial promotion in India, but that has changed since the arrival of athletes like Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, and others.
In September, CRED unveiled a never-before-seen incarnation of gold-medal winning javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who made history by becoming India’s first-ever gold medalist in athletics at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
The viral commercial demonstrated how people from other sectors are attempting to profit from Neeraj Chopra’s popularity. In the commercial, the star javelin thrower portrayed a variety of personas.
