The teaser for Kabir Khan’s sports drama 83 has been released online, starring Ranveer Singh as former cricketer Kapil Dev. The film chronicles how the Indian cricket team, dubbed “no one’s favourite,” moved from being the underdogs to winning their first World Cup in 1983 by defeating the reigning champions, the West Indies.”35 saal pehle hum log aazaadi jeete, magar izzat jeetna baaki hai, kaptaan,” Pankaj Tripathi, who plays the team’s then-manager PR Man Singh, tells Kapil, “we gained independence 35 years ago, but we are yet to win respect, captain.”
The Indian team makes a dramatic comeback in the second part of the trailer, with Kapil hitting one six after another, destroying changing room windows, glasses, and car windscreens. Off the field, Deepika Padukone, who plays his wife Romi Dev, is his biggest supporter. While the 83 teaser is filled with passion, it also includes some humorous moments. The nearly four-minute film also features Harrdy Sandhu as Madan Lal, Ammy Virk as Balvinder Singh Sandhu, Saqib Saleem as Mohinder Amarnath, and others.

83 will be released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam on December 24. The Tamil and Telugu versions will be presented by Kamal Haasan’s Raajkamal Films International and Nagarjuna Akkineni’s Annapurna Studios, respectively, in collaboration with Reliance Entertainment. The film will be released in Malayalam and Kannada, thanks to Prithviraj’s production and Kichcha Sudeepa’s Shalini Arts.
