Marvel has unveiled a trailer for Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen.
On Wednesday night, a teaser for Marvel’s next film, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, was unveiled. The teaser was first revealed as a post-credits sequence at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was recently published. However, because it picks up where Spider-Man leaves off, Marvel took over a week to release the teaser. Doctor Strange is seen coming face-to-face with an evil version of himself in the teaser, implying that Benedict Cumberbatch may be portraying both the hero and the villain.
Doctor Strange is a sorcerer in the Marvel universe who utilises his understanding of magic to safeguard Earth from evil. Doctor Strange (2016) was the first film in which the character was introduced, and he has since appeared in multiple additional Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) faces the consequences of his botched spell from No Way Home in the two-minute teaser. Strange attempted a spell that blasted open a rift in the fabric of the multiverse in that film, in an attempt to make people forget Spider-secret Man’s identity. While Strange appears to have fixed it in the conclusion of No Way Home, we see him grappling with the consequences of it in Multiverse of Madness.
The teaser shows him seeking Wanda’s (Elizabeth Olsen) assistance, as well as glimpses of characters from the previous Doctor Strange film, including Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Strange’s love interest, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as fellow sorcerer Karl Mordo. It also gets a first look at Xochitl Gomez as Miss America, a new character introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in this film. The teaser’s crowning beauty, though, comes at the end, when Strange confronts a presumably malevolent version of himself, whom the voice-over refers to as “the biggest menace to our universe.”
