It’s always a good moment to honour Irrfan Khan, the man with a golden heart and a commanding screen presence. But it’s even more so today, on Irrfan’s 55th birthday, January 7th. As the first week of the year 2022 draws to a close, and the euphoria of the holiday season fades into the crisp winter air, it’s time to snuggle cosy, grab a beverage of your choice, and binge on a selection of Irrfan Khan’s films that depict the warmth and complexity of human interactions.
Let’s toast to Irrfan Khan this weekend while you watch these films on various OTT platforms.
The Lunchbox (Amazon Prime Video)
‘The Lunchbox,’ if there is one film that epitomises the term ‘flawless,’ it is ‘The Lunchbox.’ Irrfan Khan’s performance as Saajan Fernandes, an ageing widower who finds a friend in Ila, a young married woman in a troubled marriage, elicits emotions you didn’t know you had. An eternal romance can be created with a few handwritten letters, a few well prepared meals, and a meeting that never took place. Do you believe Saajan finally got off the train to meet Ila? Yes, I do.

Piku (SonyLiv)
This film tells the story of both Rana Chaudhary (Irrfan Khan) and Piku (Deepika Padukone) and Bhaskor Banerjee (Bhaskor Banerjee) (Amitabh Bachchan). Journeys are said to teach you a lot about yourself and other people, and this film is all about that. Irrfan’s chemistry with Deepika is endearing, as is their banter, which occasionally leads to heartfelt dialogues.
Qarib Qarib Single (Netflix)
Irrfan Khan and Parvathy Thiruvothu were an adorable couple in Qarib Qarib Singlle. As the charming Yogi, Irrfan captures hearts as he embarks on a journey with a young widow, Jaya Shashidharan (Parvathy), to see his ex-partners. A light-hearted film about two very different people who, despite their differences, fall in love and embark on a journey full of ups and downs.
Karwaan (Amazon Prime Video)
Another Irrfan Khan-led travel film with a nice and touching plot. Isn’t it amazing how Irrfan could make any character credible and likeable with ease? Irrfan is stunning as Shaukat, who sets out with his friend Avinash Rajpurohit (Dulquer Salmaan) to find his father’s misplaced mortal bones. There are instances when the usually animated Shaukat becomes vulnerable, and he shows the complicated relationship he had with his father in a few lines, demonstrating Irrfan’s unrivalled artistry once more.
The Namesake (Disney+ Hotstar)
The Namesake is an English-language drama film directed by famous filmmaker Mira Nair, based on the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri. In this deep storey about identity, marriage, and the bond between parents and children, Irrfan shares screen time with the stunning and brilliantly gifted Tabu. The film follows a Bengali couple, Ashoke (Irrfan) and Ashima Ganguly (Tabu), who are first-generation immigrants to the United States, and their children, Gogol (Kal Penn) and Sonia (Tabu) (Sahira Nair).
