On Saturday, India’s single-day cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) surpassed 1.40 lakh, following yet another enormous rise of 1,41, 986 infections. According to the morning update from the Union ministry of health and family welfare, the country saw more than 1 lakh Covid-19 cases logged in 24 hours for the second day in a row. Saturday’s results are 21% higher than the previous day, bringing India’s total Covid-19 tally to 3,53,68,372.

According to the health ministry data, the active caseload has risen exponentially in the last 24 hours, with as many as 100,806 infections added to the tally. With this, the number of active cases in the country has risen to 472,169, comprising 1.34 percent of the overall number of cases. The states with the most active cases include Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

Covid-19-related deaths are continuing to drop, with 285 individuals succumbing to the condition, down from 302 on Friday. On Thursday, the virus claimed the lives of 534 people across the country.

As per the recent health ministry update, the overall number of patients who have recovered from the virus has risen to 3,44,12,740, with as many as 40,895 of them recovering in the last 24 hours. This confirms that the country’s pattern of increasing new recoveries has remained stable, providing some solace in an otherwise bleak situation.

The Omicron strain, which was initially detected in South Africa, is to blame for the spike in everyday infections. Since its discovery in India in December 2021, this highly transmissible variant has been linked to almost 3,000 cases. On Saturday, the country’s Omicron tally reached 3,071, with Maharashtra and Delhi leading the way with 876 and 513 cases, respectively.

In the last 24 hours, a total of 90,59,360 Covid-19 vaccination doses were administered to eligible beneficiaries, including 32,55,915 teenagers. India’s total vaccination coverage has now crossed 150.06 crore people.
