Bollywood always holds an integral place in our hearts, however, we all can collectively agree that box office collections are not always fair. We mean that it is often observed that great films earn not-so-good amounts, whereas, films with absolutely no storyline make records. Trust us, we are not even kidding when we say this. Well, let us have a look at some of the films that deserved so much more appreciation than the audience gave them.
- Gangs of Wasseypur
This multi-generational crime saga has bagged an IMDb rating of 8.2, we repeat, IMDb rating of 8.2. Still, the two-part film series tanked at the box office and earned only around 27 crores and 31 crores, respectively. Even the second part could not make it and was declared a flop. The funny thing is that these same films have been viewed as cult classic.
- Udaan
Udaan is a classic and is criminally very much underrated! The masterpiece which was released in 2010 has an IMDb rating of 8.1. However, even after such a fantastic rating, the movie’s box office collection was just Rs.3.3 crores at a budget of Rs.5 crores. Anyway, if you still have been sleeping on the film then you should go right away and watch this tale of a seventeen-year-old boy.
- Mera Naam Joker
Honestly, it is sad to see that films which are now tagged as ‘iconic’ were once a commercial disaster. An excellent example of a flop at the box office but a movie with a great storyline is Mera Naam Joker. According to reports, this classic movie with Raj Kapoor was a financial failure at the box office. The audience at that time did not connect with it because of its lengthy running time and emotionally heavy plot but it is now an age-old amazing movie.
- Agneepath
Amitabh Bachchan’s character Vijay Deenanath Chauhan and his celebrated intro was actually a failure at the box office back in the year 1990. The movie failed, partly due to its big budget. Its earnings were over 10 crores at the box office. It’s even more crazy considering that a remake version was released 22 years later and it became a box office hit. Karan Johar even mentioned in an interview that back in the day his father had been upset by the film’s failure.
- Masaan
This film which is set in the beautiful city of Varanasi was truly a work of art. The direction, the storyline that was based on exploring life, death and regressive stigma, the shots, the acting, etcetera, everything was one of a kind. Masaan was a small-budget film and was made in around Rs.8 crores but it only collected over Rs.5.25 crores.
So, this was our list of classics that deserved a lot more. Do let us know which is your favourite underrated film.
