Congress MP Shashi Tharoor responded to the attack on him that involved his late wife Sunanda Pushkar. He said that involving his late wife in this matter was unforgivable. He further said that no one is more aware of her views than him. He also added that she was a person who believed in reconciliation and not hates.
The controversy started when the politician tweeted that the movie “The Kashmir Files” has been banned in Singapore. He tweeted “Film promoted by India’s ruling party, Kashmir Files, banned in Singapore”. In a reply to this, the Kashmir Files lead actor Anupam Kher and director Vivek Agnihotri criticized Sashi Tharoor heavily in reply to the tweet. The director tweeted and called Singapore the most regressive censor in the world. He also added that it even banned The Last Temptations of Jesus Christ.
After a netizen informed that Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar was a Kashmiri Pandit, Mr. Agnihotri deleted his earlier tweet and wrote an apology to her soul in a manner that attacked the politician Shashi Tharoor. He tweeted, “Hey Shashi Tharoor, is this true that Late Sunanda Pushkar was a Kashmiri Hindu? Is the enclosed SS true? If yes, then in Hindu tradition, to respect the dead, you must delete your tweet and apologise to her soul.”
The lead actor of ‘The Kashmir Files’ Anupam Kher also joined the already heated debate. He too tweeted and slammed Mr. Tharoor. He tweeted and said that his insensitive and cruel disregard for the Kashmiri Hindus genocide is tragic. He also added that if not for anyone else that at least for the sake of his wife, Sunanda, he should show some sensitivity towards Kashmiri Pandit. His wife was from Kashmir as well. He further said that the politician should not feel victorious about a country banning a movie like The Kashmir Files. Shashi Tharoor also replied to this by saying that he just tweeted some factual information with no comment on the film. He also said that he has not seen the film as well. He didn’t directly name anyone in this tweet.
The Kashmir Files is directed by Vivek Agnihotri and stars Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi in lead roles among others. The film sparked debate before as well when some states like Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh exempted it from entertainment tax.
