On January 26, India will commemorate its 73rd Republic Day. As you may know, the Constitution of India came into effect on this day in 1950, replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the country’s governing document. Given that the holiday is only a day away, here is a compilation of timeless patriotic tunes to enjoy. We’ve chosen some songs that make you extra patriotic today, from Lata Mangeshkar’s Aye Mere Watan to AR Rahman’s Maa Tujhe Salam to Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera.
1. Naya Daur – Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawanon Ka
One of my favourite patriotic songs is arranged to the music of Bhangra and includes a dance. It makes you proud to be an Indian citizen and inspires you to get up and do something good for the country. This is a highly upbeat and inspiring song.
2. Teri Mitti – Kesari (2019)
This passionate tune is the most recent addition to the patriotic song series. Soulful lyrics, skillfully performed, with a smidgeon of Punjabi tinge makes me wistful for a region famed for its heroic sons.
3. Border – Sandese Aate Hai (1997)
This song expresses the longing of a soldier stationed on the frontiers, separated from his or her family by only letters and memories. It enables you to appreciate the sacrifices they make and the respect they are due.
4. Bhagat Singh’s Legend – Mere Rang De Basanti Chola (2002)
This song transports you back to the days of the freedom movement when men like Bhagat Singh risked their lives to secure the country’s independence. It serves as a reminder of these young men’s desire to see the country become independent. These songs make you question whether you are honoring their sacrifice, especially for those of us who were born after independence.
5. Yeh Jo Des Hai Mera (Swades)
This one will make you fall in love with India even more. Shah Rukh Khan was outstanding in this film, which thoughtfully addressed many of the difficulties that our country is facing.
Team Glamwist wishes you a very Happy Republic Day!
